Candle Care
Candles are safe products, but unless they are used safely and watched carefully, they can lead to accidental fire. Proper Candle Burning is essential for fire prevention, safety and maximum candle enjoyment.
Canterbury Cabin urges candle consumers to follow these rules for candle safety.
These rules are also recommended by the National Candle Association. ALWAYS trim wick to ¼” every time you burn the candle to prevent excessive flame or smoke. Untrimmed wicks can cause excessive flame height, wicks to “mushroom”, and increase the soot output while burning the candle. Did you know that Soy Wax has a ‘memory’? ALWAYS burn your candle until it has created a full melt pool to the edge of the jar on first use. This may be up to 2 to 3 hours. Improper burning technique may cause the candle to “tunnel” thus limiting the maximum enjoyment of the candle. NEVER burn a candle for more than 4 hours at a time NEVER leave a burning candle unattended or out of sight. ALWAYS completely extinguish candles when leaving a room or before going to sleep. Keep candles out of reach of children and animals. Don’t place lighted candles where they might be knocked over by children, pets or anything else. Pet hazards – a dog’s wagging tail can send a candle flying, and cats have special places they like to jump or climb/lay on. Please make sure the burning candle is not in one of these proximities. NEVER burn a candle where it may fall onto a person – like a headboard on a bed. NEVER burn a candle near a draft, vent, ceiling fan, open window or other air current. This will help prevent rapid, uneven burning, and avoid flame flare-ups and sooting. Drafts can also blow lightweight items like curtains or papers into the flame where they could catch fire. NEVER burn a candle on or near anything that can catch fire or that is heat sensitive. ALWAYS burn candle on a stable, heat resistant surface. NEVER burn a candle on or in a scratched, chipped, cracked or otherwise damaged container. Do not let wick trimmings, matches or other flammable debris drop into the wax. Trim & Remove any wick debris before re-lighting the candle. Do not move candle when burning or if wax is hot. Keep water away from burning candle or hot melted wax. Water can cause hot wax to spatter and might cause a glass container to break. Place burning candles at least 3 inches apart. This ensures they won’t melt one another or create drafts that can cause candles to flare. For a margin of safety, Discontinue candle use when only ¼ ” to ½” of unburned wax remains in bottom of container. Use a candle snuffer to extinguish a candle. It’s the safest way to prevent wax splatters. Make sure the wick stays centered every time the candle is burned. Make sure to enjoy your soy candles!
Please Note – this list is not a comprehensive list of all candle burning hazards. It is meant as a consumer guideline. For detailed information on candle burning hazards and precautions please refer to The National Candle Association’s website (www.candles.org).
Failure to follow instructions could result in fire hazard or injury.
Improper burning techniques could limit the enjoyment of the candle.
Disclaimer: Proper candle care and candle burning is a responsibility. Do it wisely and with caution and awareness for the environment and surroundings of the burning candle.
